Is the filesystem metaphor wrong?

This has been going around the development world for a while, but this is a nice succcinct writeup from Informal Protocol

“There’s an important distinction here, and that’s separating files as UI from files as API. iOS (and, to a lesser but growing extent, Mac OS) has proven the value that users should not have to manage their own file system, that files as UI is a poorer user experience.”

I’m not sure that the alternatives (Relational DB? Big Table? SOLR?) are any better, but they are all valid. The filesystem is an illusion anyway. Maybe it should just be a big data dictionary…
